The building was originally constructed in 1956 by William M. Keck, Sr. to accommodate the corporate headquarters of his family's company, Superior Oil. The Keck family recruited the preeminent Los Angeles architect of the period, Claud Beelman, to design a building that would reflect the technological advancements and corporate optimism of its time. His employment of unadorned, luxurious materials and elegant modernist design established the building as one of the finest examples of Mid-Century Californian architecture. The majestic lobby has now been designated a historic architectural landmark. Mr. Balazs acquired the building in 2000 and executed with designer Shawn Hausman his vision of the vibrant award-winning hotel it is today.
